Detailed Description

Price: €35.00

You could be forgiven for thinking that Irish innovation began in the Celtic Tiger era. But the innovative Neolithic Irish built an observatory at Newgrange 5,000 years ago, before the pyramids were even built!

Did you know that the Irish invented the hypodermic syringe? And the ejector seat? And the modern submarine?

All of this information and much, much more can be found in Ingenious Ireland: A county-by-county exploration of Irish mysteries and marvels, by Mary Mulvihill - a unique celebration of our scientists and inventors, our natural history and landscape and our industrial heritage.

Ingenious Ireland is the first book of its kind ever to be published in Ireland. It brings together a wealth of information drawn from a huge number of sources and is packed with fascinating facts about Irish wildlife, local history, our landscape, inventors and oddities - the list goes on and on.

Author Biography

Mary Mulvihill is one of Ireland's foremost science journalists. She contributes regularly to The Irish Times and, for 10 years, was an editor of Technology Ireland. Such is her passion for her subject that she gave up working for three years to devote her time to compiling this book. Overall she spent six years relentlessly trawling the libraries and museums of Ireland for stories of the little-known people and places whose contribution to scientific history have put Ireland on the map.
